چکیده

BACKGROUND: The movement of animals makes them fascinating but difficult study subjects. Animal movements underpin many biological phenomena, and understanding them is critical for applications in conservation, health, and food. Traditional approaches t o animal tracking used field biologists wielding antennas to record a few dozen locations per ani· mal, revealing only the most general patterns of animal space use. The advent of satellite t racking automated this process, but initially was limited to larger animals and increased the resolution of trajectories to only a few hundred locations per animal The last few years have shown exponential improvement in tracking technology, leading to smaller tracking d~

The 12 June Reviews by R. Kays et al. (“Terrestrial animal tracking as an eye on life and planet,” p. 1222) and N. E. Hussey et al. (“Aquatic animal telemetry: A panoramic window into the underwater world,” p. 1221) highlight some challenges to the future of terrestrial and aquatic telemetry studies, respectively, focusing on issues related to global collaboration and data sharing. The Galactic Habitable Zone I. Galactic Chemical Evolution

We propose the concept of a ”Galactic Habitable Zone” (GHZ). Analogous to the Circumstellar Habitable Zone (CHZ), the GHZ is that region in the Milky Way where an Earth-like planet can retain liquid water on its surface and provide a long-term habitat for animal-like aerobic life. In this paper we examine the dependence of the GHZ on Galactic chemical evolution. The single most important factor...

Beyond the principle of plentitude: a review of terrestrial planet habitability.

We review recent work that directly or indirectly addresses the habitability of terrestrial (rocky) planets like the Earth. Habitability has been traditionally defined in terms of an orbital semimajor axis within a range known as the habitable zone, but it is also well known that the habitability of Earth is due to many other astrophysical, geological, and geochemical factors. We focus this rev...

A Model of the Temporal Variability of Optical Light from Extrasolar Terrestrial Planets

The light scattered by an extrasolar Earth-like planet’s surface and atmosphere will vary in intensity and color as the planet rotates; the resulting light curve will contain information about the planet’s properties. Since most of the light comes from a small fraction of the planet’s surface, the temporal flux variability can be quite significant, ∼ 10−100%. In addition, for cloudless Earth-li...

Synthetic spectra of simulated terrestrial atmospheres containing possible biomarker gases.

NASA's proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder, a space-based interferometer, will eventually allow spectroscopic analyses of the atmospheres of extrasolar planets. Such analyses would provide information about the existence of life on these planets. One strategy in the search for life is to look for evidence of O3 (and hence O2) in a planet's atmosphere; another is to look for gases that might be p...
